The Difference between Deodorants and Antiperspirants

I learnt there is a difference between deodorants and antiperspirants.

Deodorants mask body odors and organic manufacturers promise wonderful ways to do it, from cotton fibers that absorb moisture to hops and other herbs. But at least they are relatively natural.

Antiperspirants, on the other hand, are stronger and literally block the sweat glands and while they are more effective at preventing bacterial odor, concerns have been raised about their aluminum content, which is why the FDA regulates them as drugs. The scare literature out there refers to allergies, dermatitis, Alzheimers and other potential worries. Above all, there is something unsettling about the idea that we should block the body’s ability to sweat, which cools us off.

Use antiperspirants, if you have to, for the office or meetings but use them sparingly. Studies suggest we be careful about excessive daily applications. Sometimes the right choice of clothing is the best solution.

Use organic deodorants the rest of the time if you really need something.

Use nothing the rest of the time, especially in the weekend. Or do web searches to see what other enterprising people are experimenting with. I would list some of the things people have tried but it’s endless. Women could consider not shaving under the arms like some European women - hair is the best absorbent of moisture after all – but I’m sure I’ll have zero success promoting that idea.
