Pet Safety and poisonous plants

By Eileen Salmas

To keep pets safe during the holidays, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center publishes a list of plants to monitor or avoid. Should your pet ingest any of them, call the ASPCA emergency hotline at (888) 426-4435 for round-the-clock telephone assistance. They state that a $65 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card.

Ingesting bulb plants often cause the most severe illnesses. The ASPCA website (here) lists 17 of the most common threats and most gardens and yards have several of them. They include:

Lilies
Marijuana
Sago palm (shown below)
Tulip/Narcissus bulbs
Azalea/Rhododendron
Oleander
Cyclamen
Kalanchoe
Amaryllis
Autumn crocus
Chrysanthemum
English Ivy
