Why there is no Earthquake Preparedness

As we all know, most people pay no attention to warnings about earthquakes. It’s human nature. If you are reading this and you have done nothing, then you see what I mean.

The media periodically run stories about this, yet they invariably leave out critical information – the 4-5 items you really need and where you can find them right now if you want to buy them. The answer is that if you live in Encino you should pay a trip to the SOS Survival Products store at 15705 Strathern Street, Van Nuys, California 91406, telephone (818) 909-0131, up by the airport. There is nowhere else close that has what you need. And here is what you should buy:

1. One 55 gallon water container for drinking water. You can buy smaller ones if you want. Either way it’s better than swimming pool water (definitely not recommended, but that’s what people used in 1994).
2. Food – lots of canned food – we opted for cans of tuna. You are going to need a week’s worth. Remember Hurricane Katrina took three weeks before anyone arrived.
3. Fire extinguisher – if you have a fire, who do you think is going to put it out? You. I also have seen them at Costco and I’m sure they must be at Home Depot.
4. Miscellaneous: first aid kit, hand-cranked flashlight, hand-cranked transistor radio. I have these already but I see SOS is offering a combined Solar, Handcrank Radio/Flashlight! New batteries a bonus.
5. Personal: be prepared to stash emergency supplies for the following if you use them: glasses, contact lenses, medication, spare set of car keys, diapers, pet food, cash…
