Storing food for emergencies
If there were a major emergency in Los Angeles like a massive earthquake or a pandemic, how long would your food last? Imagine, if all the supermarkets are emptied, then relief supplies take weeks to arrive. Some companies specialize in providing quality freeze-dried foods, so we decided to try one, at a friend’s recommendation. Daily Bread is an LDS (Mormon) company based in Utah and they will ship you anything you want – some of their packages will last for decades. All you add is water. I tried the lasagna which came in a packet, added hot water and waited 10 minutes while it stewed. It was, I have to say, really good - here is their website. They also offer diced beef, chicken, turkey and ham, ground beef, green peas, beans, sweet corn, broccoli and various fruits and a lot more. They also offer an Emergency Kit (for $250 you get a 2-week food supply, 3 meals per day for 1 adult), water pumps and filters, a “stove-in-a-can” and more besides. Freeze-dried foods were originally produced for the U.S. military and NASA. Nowadays they are useful in disaster preparedness. |
